Am I a reincarnation of Amelia?
I was asked this question at Dland, while we were waiting in line for Soaring over California. This is not the first time I have been told that I resemble Amelia.
Amelia was born with a spirit of adventure. She spent long hours climbing trees, hunting rats with a rifle and "belly-slamming" her sled down hills, not your typical "girly" ventures..
Amelia was the 1st woman to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic at age 34. On May 20, 1932 she set off from Newfoundland and 14 hours later she landed in Ireland. She became the 1st person to fly solo from Honolulu to Oakland, CA in 1935.
During her attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 she along with her navigator disappeared over the Central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. The mystery surrounding her disappearance still fascinates people today.
For Halloween 2008 I did dress up as Amelia, for some reason I am drawn to her story. She led a interesting life, never settling for one occupation and always looking for adventure, she found her passion for flying and never let it go, she was a pioneer in her field and she let nothing stand in the way of her dreams.
So when people say I resemble Amelia I take it as a compliment...
